Dear Gophervids Subscribers,

Welcome to Skywind! Thanks to Gophers little video of recommendation we have had a fantastic response :)

If you are wanting to help then please read the following for information on what type of tasks you might be best suited for. Hopefully you will find one that you want to do.

There is a small team of people who work on this website literally 24/7 (as a team, no individual has done that yet, close, but not yet). There are no team leaders as such, just people with knowledge around certain subjects, so there is no strict organizing or micro managing of things.

The tasks change on a weekly basis which is why it is difficult to assign people to jobs who are not listening in to daily conversation. To fully grasp what needs to be done and what has been done, you need to be proactive in seeking information and asking questions. But we will try and keep the forums updated as best we can.

The first important rule; is that if you truly want to help, that you carry through with your task. About 70% of people stating that they want to help invariable leave without trace. This in fact hinders the project. This makes it hard to organize or collate things, and just means that the people who stick with the project end up taking the work on, starting from scratch usually because the person has not communicated what they have done.

So without scaring too many people off, enthusiasm is great, but results are better.

Here are the current tasks:

Voice Actors:
A category that we have not focused on for a while, but we really need to get people on-board. Please go to the thread for finding about how you can help with voice acting.
http://morroblivion.com/forums/skywind/skywind-development/3022

NPC Face Generation:
All NPC need to be edited by hand, there are plenty of them so if you want to do some then there is a list of what needs to be done on the following thread:
http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-mod-releases/3379

Modelling:
I’ll split this up into three different ways that you can help. We have a core set of things that need to be done. This includes getting the Armor, Clothing, Weapons and Creatures into Skywind. These need to be defined exactly how each will be achieved, but if you are up for the challenge then you can help with getting this process underway.
For Armor specifics go to this thread: http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-development/3423

Another way you can help, but probably not as much fun, are the tasks of checking over our models and fixing them when a problem is encountered. The best way to get involved will be to join the chats and as issues arise, simply volunteer to look and fix it. Or you can actually do some testing and find stuff as you go.

Finally like any Skyrim mod, you are more than welcome to work on any aspect of the game. There are 5,000 meshes and textures each, so plenty to enhance.
If architecture of a favorite faction is your sort of thing, or flora and trees, whatever it is, then go ahead. It might be fixing a texture to better a fit a model or remodeling the meshes themselves.

Whatever you’re forte, it will pay to state in the thread what you want to work on so that you are not at conflict with anybody else, but here is a chance to immortalize your work into a game.

If you are interested then we are currently setting up a 3D modeling team where we will have people who can concentrate of certain tasks. We will not limit you in anyway, if you want to work on something by yourself, thats fine, but we also will have a group that will work together on producing outstanding assets. Visit the link below for more information on the modeling team: http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-development/3691

Creation Kit / TES5Edit / Modding:
Have some experience with the Creation Kit or know your way around ESP/ESM data? Without directing you to anything specific, state what you know and you will be able to jump right in and help. Leave a message and we will get you into the chat and tasks will surface for you to help with. We will need potential script writers for various game mechanics, so if you are interested in figuring out with us how to achieve some of these things, then you will enjoy becoming part of the team.

Level Design / Editing:
Although the world of Morrowind is fairly set in what it looks like there is still a lot of work to be done in making it look better. First and foremost is the land texture editing. If you have loaded up Skywind you will noticed that land texture placing is by the process of an automated port. There are plenty of places that need hand editing within the Creation Kit to make the textures more seamless. Also check where you might want to do a little level design to tidy things up. We have ported directly from the Morrowind world but adding small aspects that enhance the environment will help to make the experience better.
If you have lighting or effect experience then there are all sorts of neat things that can be utilized for Skywind that you might be inspired to try or suggest.

Navigation-Meshing
Members of the team are systematically going through each cell, but it’s a time consuming task. We have some tutorials on what to do and we can help and direct you. This is good if you have a bit of spare time now. Check out the thread below for information.
http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-development/3333

Coding / Scripting:
We have some tools that we are working on to help port things now and in future. We have some coders working on some Modelling tools. We use scripts to manipulate data as well, for various batch type operations. Any experience with the layout of data in all/any the Elder Scroll games will mean that you will be able to help with various needs and tasks. This is the core of setting up Skywind at the moment.
The thread below is does not specifically define anything that needs to be done, but it’s place that we have discussed a few aspects of tools that we might need.
http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-development/3487

Quests:
Setting up all the main quests of Morrowind into Skywind is a mix between porting automatically and hooking up information manually. If you are willing to learn the process then this will be a major step in getting the game working. Please visit the following thread for how you can help.
http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-mod-releases/3306

General Tasks:
As I said it’s a small team so trying to organize tasks is a little difficult if you don’t have any of the above skills or knowledge. The best thing you can do is keep visiting the forum and there is bound to be stuff that crops up. We will post them here and you might think you are up for the challenge

Hello! Gopher pointed me this way and I have come calling. I started modding skyrim recently and I have dabbled in many aspects.  I'm just starting to upload some of the mods I make And I'm trying to open a YouTube channel to teach people how to mod various games. As you can see, I have some time on my hands Because I'm a smart kid in an easy 8th grade. I have time to play test. I also am rather good at programming having extensively worked with Lua. I know how to use papyrus well. I can create textures to some extent and have software to 3D model but have never had a chance to use it. I also am rather good at Nav Meshing and things like NPC creation. I'd love to be part of this project and I hope it could help jump start me into the modding community. Thanks!

To be specific I'm specializing in Database.

I know a handful things about programing: Java and ASP.Net (Microsoft Visual Web development)

Here are some:

Website creation: HTML, Dreamweaver

Database management: SQL (Microsoft Access)

Video games program: Alice

Email for more info.

Don't got a handful time to myself but i am willing to adjust because i just love playing this type of video game. Sadley I've given up on playing video games because i can't afford them.

But i didn't say anything about creating video games.

Hi I just watched Gophers Vid.
I really want to help you guys. I am good at 3d moddeling, texturing and animations.  I have baisc knowledge of rigging, so i can do easy rigging work, too.
Do you have something like an Asset- or tasklist?

Usually  I use 3ds Max, z brush, mudbox, topogun and photoshop.

Trytonlee great work I am happy to see that project going forward, and now hopefully even faster. Sandly I dont have time right now to help.

But I am writing here to suggest you putting happychappy guide how to help in to your first post, so people that come here know straight away how can they help. Just my suggestion.

ok will do :)

Hey everybody

This is a little addendum to (HappyChappy's) post. I am a 3D modeler, most of the work I do is for film, VFX, and still compositing. I mention this not for the purpose of puffing up my skill set, in fact just the opposite. Yesterday,  like many others I saw "Gophers" video and made my way to this site, eager to help. My thinking was what a great project to get involved with. I still think it's a great project and I am eager to get involved....but...

So in my excitement to get started I first found a working partner "Drumber" he does textures. {read my side note about putting together an asset team below} I built a mace as a test object for "drumber" and I to use to work out our work flow. Good thing I did, got the model built  no problem, sent the first UV map template to "Drumber" for his review. Now for the tricky bit, once the mace has it's textures it still is not done. After modeling and texturing the asset must be packaged for the game using a *.Nif pluggin for 3dMax or whatever app. Then a bunch of arcane stuff has to be done to it in a program "Nifscope" to get it ready for the game engine.

Those last two steps, I know nothing about other than I figured out late last night that they need to be done and that it is very involved. So I need to learn how to do Nif integration in order to produce deliverable assets. That said I am not afraid to get my hands dirty, But I do not know how long it will take to figure it all out. So what I have learned so far is that where my 3D skill set seemed like it would be useful but without a working knowledge of Nif my usefulness is very limited.

Side note about putting together an asset team.

First let me say that 3D asset pipelines tend to involve a teams because 3D assets for movies/games are very complicated. If it was easy everybody would be doing it. Let's just agree that is not easy and move on.

With that said, here is what I think needs to happen. "feel free to interject, I'm just "spit-balling".

First we need a teem leader, someone to organize the asset creation team. Basically an acting program manager for 3D assets. Next we need people with the following 3D skill sets.

Modeling: building meshes, Optimizing meshes, Make morph targets, Editing meshes and making the initial UV maps for the texture team. Build organic meshes with poly flow required by the rigging and animation teams. Modelers you know the drill.

Texturing: Build/edit color maps, Build/edit normal maps, build/edit alpha maps, Build/edit spec maps ect. Texture makers you know the drill.

Rigging: Rigger with Nif experience or willing to learn Nif. Hard body rigging, Soft body rigging, Face rigging, Build riggs to game spec. Build riggs to animation team spec when it does not conflict with game requirements. Riggers you know the drill.

Animators: Hard body animation, Soft body animation, face animation, lipsync, Biped animation, Quadruped animation, strange and freaky creature animation. Animators you know the drill.

3D Asset integrator: Compile and package 3D assets for the game engine.

Testers: The test team needs it's own leader. Create test cases for 3D assets, Make bug reporting database, Test 3D assets as they become available, report bugs to the 3D asset leads. Testers you know the drill "they make it, you break it"

Any volunteers for the test team lead?

A Content Management System for 3D assets needs to be put in place. fancy is nice but something simple will work. Not having some way to manage the 3D assets is not going to work. This is a very high priority.

Remember I'm just spit-balling, so please keep responses constructive.

If you are interested in being on the 3D asset team send me a mail "include your skill set" for now and I will get it to the the Team lead as that gets sorted out.

If we can put together a 3D asset team, this could get real fun, real quick.

Hmm, I'm going to try and get a few of you guys into chat. It's just much easier to discuss mesh/texture related stuff in chat.

i personally think we only need a couple of threads each with designated leaders and a chain of command between the threads e.g the model thread comletes a model and then passes it on to the texture thread. these are my suggestions:

textures and meshes

3d models

animations

voice acting

npc's

coding and scripting (and quests)

and of course this thread

i have some leaders in my head :)

I "think" I can take on that animators lead role. I'm 27 with over 9 years of animating, several engines, animation school and a contributor contract for a studio back in 2005 along with being US Army for 6 years with deployment. So I might be able to handle it once I give a proper introduction to the team on my background, so they can decide on that, though this was a slight sum up of it lol

k ill give you a message if i get aproval from some higher ranking members because i would essentially be overhauling the whole forum

Hey oneseraph

I like you're proactive thinking here!

Just to give you a brief history on how things have been done so far, assets for the environment were ported from Morrowind; landscapes, architecture, interiors and various clutter and furniture.

Eloth has done a major overhaul of the textures, so we are just about HD, and replaced most of the original Morrowind textures. There have also been some custom models for various things like clutter, furniture and trees to name a few.

We do not have a number of assets still and these are mainly for armor, weapons, clothing and creatures. We are planning to use Skyrim models as much as possible to save time when we have something that suits for the Morrowind equivalent.

We are trying to resource as many assets that the modding community have done already, so that we both have a better looking world and that we are also not using Bethesda assets.

We are a small team working on every aspect of the game at the moment, but Eloth and Machine have been the driving force and people working on the Skywind graphics. You have to understand the idea of a workflow and “team” of people is kind of new concept.

However my vision is to customize as much as possible, with the only limits being getting a team together to make this possible.

So I think it’s a great idea! We just have to get organized.

I have a spreadsheet of the assets, but I can put this into a database if it will make it more robust. For the simplest idea of Content Management we could have an online spreadsheet and use columns for various information that might be important, like who is working on something, dates, versions, etc. A more advanced idea is to have source control system setup. For those who haven’t used one before it uses a central place to get the assets and can be used to control who is working on stuff and also an easy way to make sure that everybody can get the latest versions of everything. At the moment when we have done something we just post it in the chat and people grab the models. It’s worked because there are only a few of us, and we stay in contact pretty well, but probably not going to work well with bigger groups of people.

I guess its case of getting the names of 3D modellers together and doing some brain-storming on getting a workflow going. It’s going to require a bit of patience to get things up and running as I said it would be a new concept and we need people to slot into “roles”. I’m not a modeller myself, but can try and organize things as best as possible. I think its more of a case of getting communications going and setting up a few things up rather than having team leaders, for the moment anyway. If numbers grow significantly then obviously people can volunteer for roles.

I’ll start up a new thread to help better organize 3D modellers.

So I don't really know how to make any mods other than texures but I am pretty good at that.

contact eloth I'm sure we could use your skills. :)

Hey, Everyone

If Gopher sent you please read this post

Please go to the link below if you interested in being on the 3D asset team. Introduce yourself and let us know what you can do. Start with what you are really good at and what you would like to help with. Then move on to the other stuff you know but your skills in that area may not be as strong. I will give an example below.

http://morroblivion.com/forums/skyrim/skywind-development/3691

Don't worry if you are only good at one thing. Most 3D artists specialize in one or two areas. 3D generalists are rare, that's because 3D content creation is extremely complex "jack of all trades, master of none". So if you can do any of the following let us know.

Modeling, textures, Rigging, Animation, Knowledge of (Niff Tools)

Introduction example

Hi, I'm Oneseraph I am interested in being on the 3D asset team, I am an excellent 3D modeler (film and TV production level). I am skilled at producing UV maps for use by someone who can make textures "someone not me" In a pinch I can do textures but expectations should be kept "Low". I can build model meshes to accommodate Rigging, All the rigger has to do is ask. Notice that someone else will be doing the rigging, that's because if someone put a gun to my head and said "Rig that Biped" that other person would be the only one left to do it. Same goes for animation. I am trying to learn Niff and get better at texture making.

Your introduction should include Good, So-So, don't ask and what you are willing to learn. One of the potential benefits of being on the 3D asset team is learning new skills with the help of others on the team.

Thank you, Oneseraph
